Classroom Teaching and Learning Handbooks 1 - 5
Classroom Teaching and Learning Handbooks include information and strategies to help teachers enhance social skills in their classroom environment. The five levels designed for students aged 4 to13 years include activities that support the reduction and prevention bullying, with a strong emphasis on resilience, positive communication, self-management and social responsibility.
At each level there are three Units.
Unit 1 in every handbook is titled Understanding Bullying and is designed to develop common understandings of bullying:
- Understanding of what behaviours constitute bullying and why bullying is an unacceptable behaviour;
- Students’ ability to talk about bullying with each other and adults;
- Adaptive responses to being bullied including reporting bullying, seeking support and responding assertively;
- Peer support for students who are being bullied; and
- Peer discouragement of bullying behaviour
Units 2 and 3 in each handbook provide a variety of developmentally appropriate understandings and activities to address the development of social skills, cooperation and personal development of students.
Within each Unit are Modules (or sub-units).
Each Module provides the following:
- A task outlining the understandings, attitudes and skills
- Assessment criteria
- Preparation ideas
- Learning Activities details
- Activity sheets
- Resource sheets
- Thinking Journal to reflect on understandings, attitudes and skills
- Home activities designed to involve the whole family
- Portfolio assessment frameworks
Background notes aid teacher understanding of bullying and provide strategies for teaching bullying prevention effectively. Additional resources and references are also provided in each Classroom Teaching and Learning Handbook.
